How to Search Google by Date

Quick answer

Type before: or after: and a date straight after your search words, with no space after the colon: astronomy discovery before:2025/11/01. Use both for a date range. Google’s help says these find documents last updated before or after the date. If you’d rather click, Google’s Tools menu under the search box has date filters on many searches, and Advanced Search has a “last update” setting.

Search Google before or after a date

  1. Type your search as usual. Quotes and site: still work alongside the date.
  2. Add before: for older results. Put it after your words with the date straight after the colon: astronomy discovery before:2025/11/01. Google’s help says this finds documents last updated before that date.
  3. Add after: for newer results. astronomy discoveries after:2026/03/10 finds documents last updated after 10 March 2026.
  4. Use both for a range. avengers endgame after:2019-03-01 before:2019-03-05 covers the days in between.
  5. Use a year if you don’t need the day. avengers endgame before:2019 works, and so does after:2020.

The operators, with Google’s examples

All of these come from Google’s own help page, Refine Google searches. Google also says not to put a space between an operator and your search term.

Use the date filter instead

  1. Search, then open Tools. Google’s help says to click Tools below the search box (or tap Search tools on mobile) to see filters for that search.
  2. Pick the date filter. On web results Google lists a Publish date filter, which finds results based on when they were published. Google notes that the tools you see vary by search, so it isn’t always there.
  3. Or use Advanced Search. Under Tools, click Advanced Search. Its last update setting narrows results to the past 24 hours, week, month or year. For an exact range, go back to before: and after:.

Example walkthrough

Finding early coverage of an event

Illustrative example. The search and dates are made up for this guide.

You want reviews of a phone written before its price dropped on 1 June 2024. You search "phone name" review before:2024-06-01. The results skip most of the newer reviews, but a few pages updated after that date can still appear, so you check the date on each page before you rely on it.

What the date means

Google’s help describes before: and after: as finding documents last updated before or after the date, and its Publish date filter as working from when results were published. Neither is a guarantee of when something first appeared. A page you find may also show a different date of its own, so check the page.

To see what a page said on a particular day, a date search won’t help. Use the Wayback Machine instead, as our old version of a website guide explains.

Dead ends

  • A space after the colon.

Google says not to put spaces between an operator and your search term, so type before:2019, not before: 2019.

  • Expecting the Tools filter on every search.

Google says the filters it shows vary by search. If you can’t find one, type the operators.

  • Using before: on Bing.

Bing doesn’t document a date operator; it uses a date filter on its results page. Our date search tool builds it.

  • Treating the date as proof.

The operators go by when a document was last updated, so they can’t tell you when something was first said.

What if nothing works

  • Widen the range, or search a year on its own.
  • Add site: to search one site’s pages within your dates.
  • For a page that has changed or gone, look it up on the Wayback Machine, which keeps dated captures.
