Date Range Search Tool
Search engines put popular pages first, which often means older pages. If you need what's new, or what was published in a particular period, a date filter helps. The catch is that every engine does dates differently: Google has operators you type into the query, while Bing and Brave use a filter in the results address. This tool builds the right one for each.
How to use the date search tool
- Type your search as usual. You can still use quotes or
site:in the box. - Pick a period. For news-like topics, the past week or month is usually enough. Use custom dates for a specific event, such as the week of a product launch.
- Check the previews. For Google you'll see
after:andbefore:added to the query. For Bing and Brave the query stays the same and the date filter is added to the address. - Open the engine. The date filter shows as already selected in Bing's and Brave's own date menus, so you can change it there.
Date syntax by engine
| Engine | How dates work | Example |
|---|---|---|
Operators in the query: after: and before: with a year or date | astronomy discoveries after:2026-03-10, after:2019-03-01 before:2019-03-05 | |
| Bing | No date operator. Uses the results-page filter in the address: filters=ex1:"ez1" (24 hours), "ez2" (week), "ez3" (month), "ez5_START_END" (custom range, in days since 1 January 1970) | bing.com/search?q=…&filters=ex1%3a%22ez2%22 |
| Brave | No date operator. Uses the tf filter in the address: pd, pw, pm, py, or YYYY-MM-DDtoYYYY-MM-DD | search.brave.com/search?q=…&tf=pw |
Where Bing and Brave differ
- Only Google documents date operators. Google's help page lists
before:andafter:and describes them as finding documents last updated before or after a date. Bing's and Brave's operator lists have no date operator, so typingafter:2026there is just treated as a word. - Bing's custom range counts days. Bing stores a custom range as the number of days since 1 January 1970 for each end. The tool works this out for you. The past-year option uses a custom range, because Bing's menu offers 24 hours, week, month or custom.
- Brave accepts a readable range. Brave's filter takes two dates joined by "to", such as
tf=2026-01-01to2026-03-31. - These filters belong to the results page, not the query syntax. We checked that each engine accepted them in October 2026, but they aren't formally documented and could change. If one stops working, use that engine's date menu.
How reliable are dates in search?
Search engines guess a page's date from its published or modified date, structured data and when they first crawled it. A page can show as "new" because a sidebar changed, and old pages are sometimes re-dated. For anything important, check the date printed on the page itself. For news, a dedicated news search with a date filter is usually more accurate than web results.
Worked examples
- What changed in a policy this year:
"minimum wage" site:ontario.cawith "Past year". - Coverage of a specific event:
keynote announcementwith custom dates covering just that week. - Avoiding outdated advice:
best budgeting app reviewwith "Past month", then compare with the same search undated.
Common mistakes
- Using a date operator on Bing or Brave. It does nothing there; use the filter this tool adds.
- Expecting exact boundaries. Engines treat dates loosely, so a page from the day before your range can still appear.
- Filtering evergreen topics. For how-to questions with stable answers, a date filter can hide the best page.
FAQ
How do I search Google by date?
Add after: and before: to your query, for example after:2026-01-01 before:2026-03-31. Google's help page documents both, and the tool adds them for you.
Does Bing support before: and after:?
Bing doesn't document them. It uses a date filter in the results address, which the tool builds, covering the past 24 hours, week, month or a custom range.
How do I search Brave by date?
Brave uses a tf filter in the address: pd, pw, pm or py, or a custom range such as 2026-01-01to2026-03-31. Brave has no date operator to type into the query.
Why do some results fall outside my dates?
Engines estimate page dates from metadata and crawl history, and a page can be re-dated when it is updated. Always check the date on the page itself.
