The best academic search engine depends on what you are trying to retrieve. Broad discovery, citation chasing and biomedical evidence are different search jobs, so a strong research workflow usually uses more than one database.

Why one database is rarely enough
Indexes differ in coverage, metadata, ranking and update schedules. If you are writing a literature review, clinical evidence summary or other work where omissions matter, document your query and repeat the concepts across multiple databases.
A practical search sequence
- Convert your question into key concepts and synonyms.
- Use a broad academic engine to learn terminology and identify cornerstone papers.
- Follow references backward and citations forward.
- Move into discipline-specific databases for controlled indexing and reproducibility.
- Record database, date, exact query and filters when the search must be auditable.
A high-ranking or highly cited paper is not automatically high-quality evidence. Search retrieves candidates; methodology determines how much confidence they deserve.
