TinEye is a specialist reverse-image search engine. Unlike broad visual-recognition tools, it is designed to find matching versions of the submitted image—including resized, cropped or edited copies—rather than merely visually similar pictures.

What TinEye is

TinEye searches by image rather than by text. It creates an image fingerprint and compares that against its web-crawled image index. The service supports uploads, image URLs, clipboard paste and drag-and-drop. TinEye says uploaded search images are not added to its index and are retained only briefly to return results.

Who TinEye is best for

Best fit

Finding where copies or modified versions of a known image appear online, tracing reuse and locating higher-resolution matches.

Probably not the best fit

Identifying a general object, finding different images of the same subject, or facial recognition.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

Limitations

  • No result does not prove an image has never appeared online; it may simply be outside TinEye’s index.
  • “First found” is the date TinEye first indexed a match, not the original publication date.
  • Not intended for identifying people or finding different photos of the same person/object.
  • Social-media image coverage is limited because many platforms restrict indexing.

Use TinEye when the image itself is the evidence you want to trace. It is particularly useful for journalists, rights holders, researchers and anyone checking whether an image predates the context in which it is currently being shared.

How to use TinEye well

  1. Upload or paste the image, then review the total match count.
  2. Sort by oldest/first found to look for earlier indexed appearances.
  3. Sort by biggest to locate higher-resolution copies.

  5. Treat provenance as an investigation: verify dates and source pages instead of assuming the oldest TinEye match is the original.
